Position
The Lipstick tree prefers tropical and subtropical climates and thrives in well-drained, fertile soils, and requires adequate sunlight for optimal growth and fruit production.
Soil
Sandy loam or loamy soils are generally ideal, as they allow for good drainage while retaining sufficient moisture for the plant’s needs. and thrives in well-drained, fertile soils. The tree can tolerate slightly acidic to neutral soil pH 5.5 to 7.0.
Mulch
Mulching helps regulate soil temperature, reduce water evaporation, and enhance overall soil health, promoting better growth and flowering of the lipstick tree.
Add a thick layer of pine bark mulch, keeping it about 20 to 30 centimetres away from the tree trunk itself (any closer and it may cause excess moisture to damage the trunk). This will retain the soil’s moisture and prevent weeds from taking over.
Fertilising
Apply fertiliser during the growing season, in spring and summer. Avoid fertilising in Autumn and winter when growth slows down.
You can also use our slow-release all-plant fertiliser. Apply one teaspoon every 4-5 months. The roots will absorb what they need.
Pruning
Pruning the lipstick tree (Bixa orellana) is done to maintain its shape, remove dead or damaged branches, or encourage new growth.
The best time to prune is after it has finished flowering. This is usually in late spring or early summer. Pruning after flowering allows the plant to recover and prepare for new growth during the active growing season. For young lipstick trees, light pruning can help shape the plant from an early age, promoting a stronger structure as it matures.
Pests and Diseases
The lipstick tree is generally resilient to pests and diseases, but like any plant, it can be affected by aphids, scale, spider mites and mealybugs.
Applying Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the vine with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.
Harvest time for lipstick fruit
The harvest time for lipstick fruit, which contains the seeds used for annatto production, typically occurs when the fruits are fully mature and ripe. This usually happens about 5 to 6 months after flowering. The fruits turn from green to a bright red color when they are ready for harvest. Harvesting them before they start to split open and release their seeds is essential, as this can affect the quality of the annatto produced.
