Clove Tree

R575.00

Syzygium aromaticum

The Clove tree is monoecious. Thus, it has hermaphrodite flowers, and is therefore self-pollinating, most pollinated by bees
This tree will start blossoming at 4 years after planting depending on climate and maintenance and reaches full maturity to produce best harvest at 10 years.

These trees can live for over 100 years, so plan a spot where they can relish for many years to come. This evergreen tree can reach up to 20 metres, and will thrive in areas with semi-shade to full sun. They perform best in humid conditions with high rainfall. If you plan to grow them in containers, ensure the container is at least 50cm long and 50cm deep for the best results. Clove trees are not tolerant of temperatures lower than 10°C.

The bark is a grey colour with a trunk that can reach 30cm in diameter. Clusters of bright red flowers form on the ends of branches. The large leaves turn from a reddish colour when they are young to green when they mature.

The red oblong fruits are fleshy. Flower buds can be chewed as a breath freshener and relieve toothache. Cloves contain essential oils with many medicinal values but are also used in cooking.
