Position:
The Hass avo tree likes plenty of sunshine and rain, and prefers to be sheltered from the wind, as far as possible.
Soil:
Dwarf Hass avocado trees require well-drained soil and regular watering, especially during hot, dry periods. They prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Pruning may be necessary to maintain their compact size and shape. Plant your avocado tree with at least one bag of acid compost as they require a soil pH of 5-7.
Size:
Dwarf Hass avocado trees reach a height of about 2m when fully grown. This makes them suitable for smaller yards or growing in containers on patios or balconies.
Mulch:
Use from 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture, and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.
Watering:
The Hass avocados, like all avo trees, are water-hungry. They need and want lots of water, especially when they’re young. In drier conditions, they may even need to be watered more than once a day. Mature fruiting plants can drink up to 75 litres of water a day. In normal conditions, you should be able to water it about 3 times a week.
Fertilising:
Fertilise your avo tree with our slow release berry fertiliser (all plant fertiliser) which is a fertilisers high in nitrogen required for avocado trees. One teaspoon every 4-5 months and your tree will absorb the nutrients it requires.
Harvest:
Avocado trees typically produce fruit within 2-3 years after planting, although this can vary depending on growing conditions. Hass avocados are typically harvested when they are still firm but yield slightly to gentle pressure. They will continue to ripen after being picked.
Suitability:
Due to their smaller size, Dwarf Hass avocado trees are suitable for both urban and suburban environments where space may be limited. They will thrive in warm winter climates.
