Kumquat Tree (Nagami) Grafted

R275.00

Kumquat trees bear small citrus fruits (about the size of olives) that are sweet with a bit of a tart taste to them. Unlike other citrus, they can be eaten with the skin.

They can also be juiced for a refreshing drink. The trees are self-pollinating, so you only need one to bear fruit.

Kumquats have lots of vitamin C, fibre, antioxidants, and a little vitamin A. They are free of cholesterol and low in sodium.  They really are a healthy, tasty snack.

Position

Kumquat trees are easy to grow in full sun. They even do well at the sea and, unlike other citrus fruit, can withstand winter temperatures as low as -8° Celsius. Give each tree about 3 to 4 metres of space around it.

Plant in well-draining soil. A slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal; therefore, adding 1-2 bags of acid compost is recommended. If you decide to use a pot, make sure to use high-quality potting soil and acid compost, and choose a pot with proper drainage that is large enough.

Container Growing

Kumquat trees can be grown in large containers if the pot has good drainage, and make sure to use high-quality potting soil and acid compost. You can even drill extra-large drainage holes and cover the holes with pebbles or a window screen to keep the soil from falling through. Raise the pot off the ground to improve drainage and air circulation. Cover the roots with a thick layer of mulch, grass, leaves, or bark in winter

Size:

This tree grows to a height of between 2 and 4 metres.

Watering:

Ensure the soil is consistently moist without overwatering it. Water deeply and allow to dry out slightly between watering, especially during dry periods.

Mulch
Apply 2 to 5 centimetres of pine bark mulch to protect the roots from UV damage and drying out. It retains moisture, and maintains an optimal pH. Do not let the mulch touch the plant stem, as it may cause infection or rot.

Fertilising:

Give your kumquat tree the best chance by fertilising them well. Apply slow-release citrus fertiliser during the harvest season and repeat after the fruiting period. Utilising our slow-release fertiliser is really beneficial for citrus; even though it is called berry fertiliser it is for all plants/trees.

Pruning:

Prune your tree to shape and remove any dead or diseased branches. Pruning also helps improve air circulation within the canopy.

Pest and Disease Management:

It is important to watch out for pests like aphids, scale insects, and mites.

If you notice any infestations, like aphids, red spider, and mildew. We recommend Effective Microorganisms to prevent the spread of these pests and diseases. It is organic and more affordable than most other products. Apply regularly as a preventative.
