Position

Victoria grapes thrive in temperate climates with warm summers and mild winters. They prefer full sun to ensure optimal growth and fruit production. Plant grapevines 2-3 meteres apart in rows, in a location with good air circulation to reduce the risk of diseases.

Sturdy support is required for grapevines. A trellis or pergola will work well. Train the vines to grow along the support structure as they mature.

Soil

They prefer well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Sandy loam soils are ideal but can also tolerate other soil types if drainage is good.

Spacing

,  This spacing allows adequate air circulation and room for the vines to spread.

Water

Water newly planted vines regularly to establish roots. Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Once established, grapes are drought-tolerant.

Pruning

Pruning is essential for grapevines to maintain productivity and health. Prune in late winter or early spring while the vines are dormant. Remove old wood and excess growth to promote airflow and fruit production.

Fertilising

Fertilise grapevines in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, as this can promote excessive vegetative growth at the expense of fruit production.

Apply our slow-release fertiliser, like our berry fertiliser Apply 1 teaspoon of our berry fertiliser every 4-5 months and the roots of the plant will absorb what they require.

Pest and Disease Management:

Watch for common grape pests such as aphids, spider mites, and berry moths. Practice good sanitation by disposing of leaves and fruit on the ground.

Agricultural Neem Oil or Effective Microorganisms (EM Control ) will assist in either prevention or after the fact. If you already have aphids or mites, wash the vine down with a harsh hosing, and when dry, spray with Neem oil or EM Control.

Harvesting

Victoria grapes are ready for harvest in late summer to early autumn, depending on the local climate. Harvest when the grapes are fully ripe and have reached their desired sweetness and flavour.
